We live right around the corner. Everyday we were like "Mmmmmm...that smells SO good. We will have to try it someday."

Well, someday came as I was washing my car, my husband walked back with two orders from Gurus. We sat outside in utter delight of the potatoes, lentils, and chicken. It was Amazing. Spicy and tender. Cooked to perfection. And the bread is wonderful too.

And those 2 orders fed us for about 3 meals. There is SO much food.

One night I was driving home with friend and we both decided we were hungry. We both live in Arlington, so have passed by Guru The Caterer a bunch of times and got curious.

We parked right in front and since the door was open, we assumed they were still opened. They weren't. However, they still indulged us and allowed us to order something. The kitchen smelled heavenly and in a couple of minutes we were on our merry way with Sagwalla Paneer, Chicken Tikka Masala, and some Samosas. This was a meal combo for ONE and an appetizer.

It turns out the food was quite delicious and so plentiful, our meal for one ended up as a meal for two and leftovers.

The menu is small and the place is no more than a kitchen, but the food was flavorful and fresh. The other standout was how nice they were to us. Maybe we looked especially hungry, but since they were closed they certainly did not have to serve us. They not only served us but were so friendly and informative that it ensured I will be back to visit again.

Good food, good prices, good portions (made 3 meals out of their vegetarian lunch set). Haven't tried their delivery service.

It's gooooood...... but what's there to blow me away?

A friend ordered food from Guru the Caterer for a housewarming party recently.  While eating, I kept saying "this is some darn good food." As the wine continued to flow through the evening, I kept saying (In a progressively louder voice) "that was some darn good food."   On the walk to the T around 12:30 a.m., I must have said "that was some darn good food" well over a dozen times.

Needless to say, Guru the Caterer is some darn good food that leaves quite the impression on your tastebuds.

--Channel 11 News--

Reporter: We're here in Somerville outside Yelp sensation, Guru the Caterer. Over the past month this Indian hole-in-the-wall has gained quite a reputation with yelp users for quick, delicious eats at shockingly low prices.

(motions to girl nearby to chat)

Now, are you what they call a "yelper"?

Girl: Why, yes! What gave me away? (She points to a blue t-shirt with a yellow and red flower looking graphic and smirks.)

Reporter: And what is it that yelpers do, exactly?

Girl: Well, basically we enjoy exploring all the cool things the city has to offer and share our opinions online with a community of folks that we often hang out with.

Reporter: Sounds like fun. And is that how you came to find out about this place?

Girl: Indeed it was. I'd seen it on the welcome page for weeks in the top restaurant category, and had to make the pilgrimage.

Reporter: Well, how was it? We've heard people complaining there's no where to sit. Does that bother you?

Girl: Not at all. They close fairly early, 7:30pm, so I had to hop on the T right after work to give us enough time for the 15 minute walk from Davis. The menu consists of a few staples and a special, both veggie and meat, so it helps the decision making process move along quickly.

In five minutes flat, and $20 later, we were awarded with two main dishes, two veggie sides, samosas and mango lassis. Then after a brisk stroll to the park at Powder House Square, you have the warm, scrumptious makings of a picnic. Climb to the top of the hill, and the sun will be setting in the horizon as you're taking your last bites. It's rather romantic.

Reporter: Just lovely. And is this the only way to enjoy Guru's creations?

Girl: Nope, they deliver combo lunches to nearby drop-off points in Cambridge. If you've got more than 8 orders they'll go wherever. But I'd recommend dropping by so you get to see the owner's adorable three year old daughter who fetches dixie cups of waters for patrons. She's precious.

Reporter: Tasty food, friendly and family owned, inexpensive. Why only four stars?

Girl: Well, we had to eat our meal with twigs.

The buzz surrounding this delicious spot is not just hype. Guru the Caterer is the real deal. Every item I've had on their rotating menu (which daily consists of vegetarian, lamb, and chicken choices) has been absolutely phenomenal. Spicy and flavorful, my favorite dish so far has been their Aloo Gobi. Don't be frightened off by their lackluster exterior, once you step inside the proprietors are helpful and welcoming, even offering up unsolicited samples of their fare for you try. Definitely add this tasty treasure to your "to try" list.

"Holy crap, I didn't know I'd be walking to India."  It's a good 20 minute walk from Davis.  Worth it, yes.  Delivered?  Even better.

Ordered about half the menu.  Not hard to do, since there's only about 6 things.  Samosas were tasty...mmm.  Some of the best Indian food I've had since moving back from Scotland.  Scotland?  That's another story.

Our 3 year old water girl was quite the charmer.  She kept the water flowing until we got our food a whole 2 minutes after we ordered.  Took it to the park down the street, only then realizing that we had not received any plasticware.  Not to worry, there were plenty of chopstick trees growing near by.

Having read so much about Guru on Yelp, I decided to take the joyous pilgrimage on a lovely sunny Saturday afternoon. We called ahead of time to find out the offerings of the vegetarian palette (I had a picky vegetarian for company) and found out that they had 4. So we get there around 12.30 pm and there was just one couple ahead of us in line and no one behind us. Once it was our turn; we found out to much to our disappointment that one of the veggie dishes mentioned on the phone wasn't on the menu. When we asked for it they said it wasn't for the regular menu but for a catering order they had, but will give it to us nonetheless. We are happy again!! So we get our order for one vegetarian meal and one chicken tikka masala meal. Instead of picnicking at the near by park we took it home to enjoy.

Being an Indian appreciating Indian food cooked outside of home is very challenging, but Guru didn't let me down. They have maintained the authenticity of Indian cooking with distinct flavors in each preparation unlike the rest of the pack.

Our meal:
Saag Paneer - Delectable
Aloo Mattar - Surprisingly and remarkably fabulous
Chana Masala - Good (slightly greasy)
Chicken Tikka Masala - Extraordinarily delish & tender chicken (slightly greasy)
Rotis - Soft and excellent
Basmati Rice - Regular
Pickle - Good
Portions - A meal and half or even two for the price of one ... I says pretty darn good!!
Missing - Chopped raw red onions (Ok! That's an Indian thing ... but it does bring out the flavor)

Absolutely torn between 4 and 5 stars ....
No Seating .... But yum food
Limited Menu .... But delicious food
Limited hours.... But tasty food
Little extra grease.... But flavorful food
But since I missed the adorable 3 year old waitress experience I will stick to 4.

I had to join Yelp to write about this place after my delicious solo dinner date last night. It was a Long day at work, and I needed a food fix--fast. Guru pops up with wonderful reviews--I say, I'll try it. I take the walk out of Davis and find a line at this so called" hot spot," where I'm entertained by the cutest three year old on the planet as delicious smells sneak out of the kitchen. Lamb samosas with sweet chutney--flaky and succulent. Chicken Tikka--saucy with huge chunks of chicken, and spinich, just the way mom makes it, pureed to dark green goodness. The pickle was lemony and flavorful. I walked to the park down the street, took my shoes off, and like Frankie said, Re-Laaaxed. Oh yeah, prolly the best Mango Lassi of my life. Generous portions meant I had PLENTY left over for lunch today. Very friendly and efficient staff. Go Guru.

Yummmmmmmmmyy
Read the yelp* reviews and ran over to get lunch. Okay, to be honest, I drove. Someone noticed - long hike out to the fringes of Somerville.
And them, no three year old waitress (check other reviews).

I am not certain what I ordered, but for $7.50 one cannot go wrong. Something with ground chicken and a lentil dish. The daily special menu was short enough not to worry. The guy behind the counter was extremely unenthusiastic, didn't make recommendations, but gave me the food and took the money. Thanks to the "twigs warning" from a fellow yelper, I grabbed some disposable utensils. Yes they are right on the counter.

I took the food to the office and sank into delight. The idea of saving leftovers didn't last long.

I certainly won't hang out with Guru, but it is a great take-out place. Food quality overrides the lack of "counter intelligence"!!!

I had to go here after reading so much about it and I can honestly say I wasn't dissapointed! You wouldn't really guess it from the outside, but this place boasts some of the best Indian food I've ever tried, and all at amazing prices!
I like my spicy food and the curries here do not dissapoint! The samosas are also succulent but I'm sure whatever you get will be great!

We picked Guru over the new sushi place in Davis because 1. it is right down the street from us, and 2. it had such awesome reviews we needed to try it for ourselves.

We were definitely not disappointed! The food was extremely well-prepared and flavorful and the lunch specials were crazy cheap. $6.95 for two vegetarian entrees, rice, and bread? Hello, best deal in Somerville! They also had some of the best samosas I have tried- better even than Diva, and fried up to order.

I only hope that this place doesn't become insane when the Tufts kids start pouring back in come September.

This is exactly why I love yelp. Where else can I find out about a hole-in-the-wall (litteraly) in Somerville called "Guru the Caterer" that serves the most delicious, inexpensive, indian food you can find!

A couple things to know before you go:
1. It is really hot in there. Stay outside as long as the line will let you
2. There will be a line
3. The earlier you go, the more choices you will have. They do start to run out towards closing.

Definitely take out of towners by here for take out....you will totally look like you are in the know!

I've been slacking a bit on the frequency of my yelp review writing. I know--tsk tsk. I just haven't had as much free time these past few months. Enter in a visit to Guru the Caterer for dinner takeout... and (borrowing a term from Emeril Legassi) BAM!... I'll MAKE the time to write a yelp review for this place.

I love Indian food in general. So flavorful and satisfying. Just a couple of problems with it, though: 1) there is no way in heck I could successfully cook it myself and 2) it seems too heavy to eat all the time. Guru the Caterer, however, addresses both of these problems with aplomb. Since I can't cook it myself, they make it instead -- fresh, homemade, abundant, and well-priced. And since it's homemade, it somehow isn't as heavy as the Indian food I've gotten at other places. In fact, I could eat this stuff almost every day (if it were more convenient to get to). And even though it's not as heavy, the flavor and spices are not sacrificed in the least -- very yummy, indeed.

Add to all this the fact that the customer service is extremely friendly and helpful beyond belief... and this place garners yet another yelp five-star review (as if it didn't have enough already!).

I think it was meant to be that I went here today for lunch.....
I pull up and there is a spot outside with minutes still left!  The service was friendly, fast, and they take credit.....A little weird at first, I am not going to lie....No tables, just a counter with one menu with 4 choices on it-2 veggie and 2 meat
Vegetarian gets 2 veggies, rice, and bread-$6.50
Non-veggie gets chicken or meat with a veggie, rice and bread.$7.50
It was fresh.  The bread is a cooked tortilla....it is not the nan that I am used to but....besides that....soooooooooo good for the $$$$.  They pack everything separately too....so not everything is mixed together...love that!

The verdict is in, and it's pretty darn tasty. My yummy smelling chicken tikka masala wasn't doing the back stroke in an oil pool, did not exhibit the fake reddish cream tan color from typical Indian places and somebody stuck a real mango in my lassi! I scarfed everything except the naan in one sitting. =/

It's cheap, fast and delicious. Now I regret I have but one stomach otherwise I'd finish the saag I got on the side too.

Incredibly friendly and off the charts in terms of cost/quality.

Between two lunch combos and an order of vegetable samosas, we were able to try nearly half of the menu. Everything was packaged in separate takeout containers, and the portions were very generous. All of the items were fantastic and left me looking forward to my next visit!

If you're looking for more obscure Indian dishes or a lengthy menu of choices, this probably won't wow you. If you want friendly service and perfectly delicious Indian basics at BELOW Chinese takeout prices... then Guru is your new best friend.

The other night, as we left Guru with another bag full of curried goodness, the line stretched well onto the sidewalk.  A police officer on meter patrol stood gawking on the curb, and asked us what, exactly, was IN that little place that had 20 people patiently waiting on a hot July night, ten minutes before closing?  We explained: it was merely heaven in a pakora, and she had to go in, now, if she wanted to feel truly alive.  She got in line.

We also love the place because Pushpinder and his family work as hard as his staff, who seem extremely happy, and everyone who works in the place exudes authentic friendliness.  Um, yeah, it might be a cult--but seriously, just go and get some chicken saag and you won't care anymore.

So this morning instead of doing "work" I was fiddling around Yelp.com again seeing what the foodies of Boston were up to when I stumbled upon this gem. And read about how awesome Guru the Caterer was. This was at about 10AM.

By 5PM I was jonsing for some Indian food badly, and decided to take the 45 minute detour to Somerville to check it out. An average of 5 stars, how could fellow Yelpers  be wrong??

And wrong they were not. I got the Chicken Tikka Masala, an order of Vegetable Samosas, and vegetables stir fried with ginger and Indian spices. Oh... my... god. I enjoy Indian food, I really do. But I don't think I've ever enjoyed it so much that I FORGOT about the bread that they give you with it.

Umm... I don't know if you know me, but I love me my bread. I love me my rice. I love carbs carbs carbs. And I was SO focused on the chicken and rice and veggies in front of me, I completely overlooked the bread. WHICH NEVER HAPPENS!

And the portion size was HUGE! I'm an eater (girl, I can put it down with the best of them), and half of my dinner is still sitting in the fridge for lunch tomorrow. And oh yes, I had dinner about six hours ago AND I'M STILL NOT HUNGRY!! WHICH NEVER HAPPENS!

It was... fresh. Delicious. Service was quick and efficient, and with a dazzling smile. I can see how this tiny hole in the wall establishment can become overrun with hungry fans. I'd give this place six stars if I could.

It rocks!

Oh teacher of fine Indian cooking techniques, divine figure of chicken tikka masala, destroyer of darkness in a slightly shady corner of Somerville, provider of light lentil dishes, conduit for wisdom  in producing fine velvety smooth mango lassi and for guidance in making perfect basmati rice, Guru I have joined your legions of followers after just one day in your presence.

I will journey to this place and rush home from work to make it in before their 7:30 close to continue my following. Competition for Inman Square's reigning champion Punjabi Dhaba and within the same price point.

Three words: nom nom nom.

This place freaking rocks.  As you'll read in the other reviews here, there is a menu that changes slightly from day to day.  I usually get the tiki masala which is soooo yummy.  And they give you rice, a side and bread too.  All for 7.50.  SO good, and there's a chance you'll have a bit left over as the portions sizes are great for the price.

It's not a sit-down place.  It's almost literally a hole in the wall, and you're in and out in under five minutes.  They only have a few things on the menu (usually one chicken, lamb and vegetarian dish -- I think) so ordering's quick.  The sides change I think...one time I got some delicious potatoes, another time I got some lentil concoction.  Parking is street parking, but they do have a couple of 15-minute spots outside, so I've never had a problem with that.

The first time I went, we saw that the Web site said they closed at 7:30.  So we got there at 7:29.  But the sign on the door said they closed at 7:00pm.  Which is probably just to keep the strays out.  That's the only downside -- how early they close.  Anyway.  If you're looking for a cheap date, grab a couple of meals from Guru and a dollar video from Red Box and you're all set.

Okay, I think I might have given the food here a 3 star review, as my veggie dish was delectable but the meat dish was so-so.  The saag was a little too food processed for me; I like bigger chunks of spinach.  However, this is me being picky me.  The service was 100% awesome--such a friendly guy at the counter.  The price is absolutely unbeatable for a good Indian meal.  It wasn't knock your socks off food--that moniker belongs to Punjab Dhaba (I think that's the name of it) in Inman square for me (and Punjab Palace in Brighton), but it was WELL worth the drive from Brighton.  I'm happy to go there any night; that much food for such a low price is insane.  Oh, and the cucumber raita--to die for!

Ambiance:  Well, I get food from Pushp at MIT.  So, I can't say what his restaurant looks like.  Your food is in a styrofoam box with your name written on a plastic bag.  It comes with 2 bread, some napkins and spoon.

Food:  When I first tasted this food, I felt as if I'd gone to Indian food heaven.  It was a struggle to stop eating.  I read that spices are suppose to keep you satiated but alas, for me, it just makes me want to eat more.  I wondered what was in his food that makes you want to just gorge, non-stop.  After eating it for a couple of months, I was able to manage my tendency to gorge a bit better.  The trouble is that you never know what you'll get.  I think I tend to really enjoy 90% of the food.  I don't know authentic food, but it's definitely tasty.

Service:  Pushp is incredibly cool.  You can get a few boxes of food and pay him back later.  It's extremely convenient to have food delivered to a building nearby.

This place is amazing! The food is delightfully tasty and the staff are pleasant and friendly. We ended up buying food for a couple of days when we found out they were going on vacation this summer. Stop reviewing this place! The food is too good, the owners and staff too nice, and the prices are too reasonable! Isn't anyone here superstitious?

I was out for a walk from Davis Sq. to Arlington, and walked by a sketchy restaurant with no windows and a single door with a strange logo on it.  Curious, I logged on yelp to be astonished at a  4+ star rating!

Every night they seem to have a chicken dish, lamb dish, and two veggie options.  The actual dishes change but the prices stay the same.  The meat dishes come with a veggie side  (vegetarian comes with two i think), and all dinners come with a serving of rice and bread.

The overall cost for a dinner (main dish, side dish, rice, bread) is in the $7-10 range.  One thing to watch out for: Closes at 7:30 PM every day.

For the last year, I've lived right off Broadway, right before you get to RT16 and have walked by the dumpy looking, little half-gutted strip mall by North St a thousand times.  All the while complaining how there wasn't anything of use in there except an iffy mini-mart and some catering place that I've never used.  In fact, one of my main complaints about Teele/Davis Sq is that while there's a lot of great places to eat, there aren't enough in and out take-out places like Dave's Pasta or Anna's Taq to go around.  Lo and behold my surprise when I went on Yelp and found out that little catering place does takeout!  So deciding to give it a try, I went in today and all I can say is....this is exactly what I've been looking for.
For starters, this place is all takeout and absolutely no frills.  The menu is simple (maybe 6-8 main options but it goes with the territory) and all the food is ready to go.  But for $10.50 I got a delicious serving of Chicken Tikka Masala, a wonderful veggie side, 2 samosas, a heaping side of rice, and bread (not as fluffy as naan but still good for dipping).  The service was a little overwhelmed at times but still very friendly (they even gave me an extra sauce).   My only teensy tiny complaint is that the chicken masala might have used a little more chicken but otherwise loved it.
I despise cooking and love eating out but hate having to spend $15+ to go and grab something to bring back to the apt but it looks like I found a new place to add to my daily rotation.

Remember The Guru? Yeah it sucked. Heather Graham's hot and everything but that movie was for girls. Now what about The Love Guru? Mike Myers has been off the radar recently but has made me laugh, somehow though the trailer for his latest just looks terrible.

And Guru The Caterer? On yeah, he's fantastic - he even has a nicely coiffeured mustache to gawk at, facial-hair fans. Unlike the lame comedy versions on cellulose though, he's not going to sort out your love life with 'hilarious consequences', instead - this guy will fill your belly with the best Indian food in Boston and for very little cash as well.

This is authentic Indian food. Ok, I've never been to India but he told me that and he has a nice mustache so I believe him. What I'm used to is amazing curries in England that are 'banquet food'. Stuff like naans and all that. Well, not here sadly. But by not monkeying around with all that stuff that never seems to work when they try it here in America, Guru can instead make a handful of dishes each day that are cooked with lavish care and are a bucket of satisfy.

So throw away the choices (who likes choice anyway? choice is overrated) and let the Guru guide your mouth to some fuckin A cooking. Bitch a little while you're there about early closing time and the lack of onion bajis, but don't be too much of a chump because you're going to get served and you want it you slut.

UNBELIEVABLE.

It's not Indian restaurant food. It's eating homemade Indian in your friend's mom's kitchen.

My friends and I couldn't believe how this place had a solid 5-star Yelp rating and had to check it out for ourselves -- and now we see why. Guru is fantastic.

The owner is SO FRIENDLY and accommodating, and the food is unbelievably cheap. You just walk in, check out the menu, and he gives you the food, couldn't be easier for take-out. And seriously you get about two portions-worth of food (not just one dish -- dish with SIDES) for under $10 and it's fresh made.

Basically these guys are caterers so their menu changes daily depending on what they've cooked. But man, it's so cheap and definitely the best Indian food I've had in the Boston area.

Don't miss out on the sides, too -- often at Indian places the desserts are kind of afterthoughts -- they're not at Guru. They're amazing. Also, definitely get some samosas!

This is my new favorite Indian spot. I'm so glad I live down the street!

Dearest Guru,

I do NOT know how I survived without you in my life these past 26 treacherous and flavor-less years.  I took a chance on you, I'll have you know.  I was an Indian virgin prior to you riding into my dull existence.  I put myself out there and you delivered.  Oh Guru, you devirginized me in a way no man ever has before.  I still have no idea what I ate but holy Guru it was phenom!  Expect to be a part of my new life on a weekly basis; not many people get that honor.  Oh how I couldn't wait to swallow your delicious veggie dish.  Granted I haven't digested it yet (I'll let you know in the morning) but no matter what happens, it was worth every curry & lentil filled bite.

Kisses!

So I finally made my way over to Teele Square to get me some Indian takeout from Guru the Caterer, and the Guru didn't let me down.  In fact, the Guru made me a little sad that I don't work closeby and therefore am ineligible for the lunch box delivery.

My friend wanted to have a picnic dinner, so I suggested getting takeout from Guru the Caterer.  We went there at 6:30 and they still had plenty of food left, so that was good.  There were two vegetarian specials available: one with okra and one with lentils and tomatoes.  We got the vegetarian combos, which came with one of each veg special as well as rice and bread (roti?).  Plus we got some veg samosas.  My friend got a mango lassi; I got a pomegranate Izze.  After our super friendly and fast server got all of our grub together (two combos, two orders of samosas, two drinks = $20!!!!!!!!!!), we took it all to the park at Powder House Square, set out some blankets, and dug in.

Everything was delicious.  I never would have chosen to order lentils or okra, but they were so good and had so much flavor.  The bread tasted so fresh, and the samosas were packed with yummy peas and potatoes.  They were the best samosas I ever had, and the accompanying chutney was awesome - it was smooth (pureed?) and didn't have a bunch of gross chunks in it, but it had great flavors.

I will definitely be returning to Guru the Caterer, even if he doesn't give me a place to eat his delicious food.  I would eat it in the car, or on the sidewalk, or standing up if I must.  That good.

I really like Indian food. I've eaten a lot of it in my time. But while I've always liked it, I've never absolutely loved it--it's never been on my list of all-time desert island foods.

Until eating food from Guru. Specifically this chicken biryani. It's such a bland dish usually, I only hesitatingly ordered it at the enthusiastic recommendation of a patron. And wow: it blew my mind completely. It's like getting assaulted by savoriness. It's spicy without being overly hot. It's umami without being aggressively salty. I just... I just can't get over this dish.

Also on the menu today, I got to taste saag paneer (very spicy, almost the consistency of a spinach emulsion), and the aloo mattar (peas and potatoes) tasted, I guess smooth and clean would be the best way to put it.

This seriously is the best Indian food I have ever eaten. I will be back here again and again.

Pushp and company rock and can do it all--from catering a University admissions committee meeting in Boston to solving the problem of what to do for dinner post-laundry in Teele Square on a Wednesday night.  Oh yeah and...

BEST SAMOSAS EVER!!!  Their filling is better than most, for sure, but the crust is *perfection*.

In full disclosure, I have never been to Guru the Caterer's location but have catered MANY a meal from Pushp.  However, Pushp is great to work with, can usually fill your order even if you only give him less than a day's notice (I'm sure he likes it when he gets more than a day notice, but he has been great in coming through the clutch!).

The food is great and there's always variety.  I'm a fan of his chicken curry and all of his veggie dishes.  He can surprise you with the special of the day, but if you have a dish you like, you can request that too!  I do love Indian food to start with, so I may be biased.  It's not my favorite Indian food in the world, but it's up there and Pushp was so easy and nice to work with that I kept going back!

Oh dear - I feel like I am going to spoil the party.  I tried Guru the other night because of all these great reviews.  I had just ignored the place because I wasn't sure I had a divine enough mind to partake in its offerings.

And maybe that's why I was underwhelmed with the food.  I bought enough food to feed myself and two of my friends.  We all loved the samosas (tried veggie and lamb) - fresh, crispy outside, flavorful fillings.  The rice was way thumbs down.  Dried out, had been sitting there way too long.  And it was a really busy night so that shouldn't have been the problem.

Got a goat curry - over tomatoed in a big way.  Not enough complex curry coming through - all you could taste was tomato.  The vindaloo had nice flavor but no kick.   What self-respecting vindaloo has no heat?  Vegetable sides were very good.

So overall, we all thought it was tasty enough but not enough to forgo our usual haunts - Punjabi Dhabi and Namaskar.  Even for the price (Guru is less expensive).

I will give it a try again, because maybe they were just having an off night.  If that's the case, I will be happy to come back and revise.

The best indian food I've found in Boston and the owner is the nicest guy around.  Take out only, but extraordinary. And very reasonable prices.

Guru is basically across the street from my house. I go there pretty often and I have always been happy. The owner (and chef, I believe) Pushpinder is super-friendly, and it's a real family business - his wife and young daughter are often there as well.

I recommend the biryani - it's some of the best I've had anywhere at any price. And the prices here are LOW - dinner for two with dessert and enough leftovers for at least two lunches is under $20, sometimes under $15 (total, not each.)
