I am planning to spend a week driving around Western France (from Montpellier to Paris). Any recommendations on what regions I have to spend more time in, what towns to visit, what wineries to sample??

Thank you!

Elena - Go to www.chowhound.com and post on the International board.  I suggest posting your itinerary, budget, etc.  - the mosre specific you get the better recommendations you'll receive.  I had some AMAZING meals in Florence and Rome last fall thanks to the Chowhound site.  Not a single tourist trap among them.  Have fun on your trip.

If you go west west - Mont st michel is an absolute must see, Normandy and Brittany. I went when I was a youngin' and the memories have stayed with me. I tried to go back when I was in Paris last fall, but it took took long by train to fit in our travel plans.

If you read French at all invest in a guide book called "le petit fute".  It has alll the best restaurants, hotels from simple budget price to absolute luxury.

Montpellier is a college town and is one of the only cities in the South of France that doesn't have a Roman history.  Its major historical & architectural traits go back to the 10th century.  So it has a different feel from other Roman influenced cities.  I would recommend you go by the Pays Cathares through Carcassone and onto Toulouse.  Perhaps hit Bordeaux and Poitiers on your way up to Paris.
