I know about the hike at Torrey Pines--I find it lame and boring. I also find Mission Trails to be on the less-than-thrilling side. I've been here five years and I've only found one hike I like, but it's an hour and a half drive from San Diego.

Does anyone have any secret spots? I promise I won't litter.

Los Penasquitos Canyon Reserve in Sorrento Valley is pretty good, and not too far out there either.

lake morena is OK.  there are some hikes in noble canyon.  however, these all get into that hour+ drive from SD area.

there's always balboa park.  and i second the penasquitos canyon suggestion.

I love hiking Cowles Mountain. And the panoramic view at the top on a clear day is amazingly rewarding. IMHO, it's just about right hike-wise in terms of challenge, workout and neat surroundings..

Also check out 'Iron mountain' trail in Poway.  It is a bit more challenging.

Lake Murray Reservoir has a beautiful 3.2 mile walk around to the dam.  Then reverse for a total of 6.4 miles.  It is part of Mission Trails Park and very convenient off 8 at the Lake Murray exit La Mesa.   http://www.mtrp.org/la...

I agree about Cowles Mtn.  There isn't a hike much cooler than being able to see the ocean from that far inland.  I can't believe how much you can see! From islands in Mexico to north of La Jolla.  Downtown and the point of Pt. Loma can be pretty clearly seen too and it doesn't really have to be that clear out for it.  Watching sunsets from the top is the best!

cowels is ok, but way to many people.  i love going up to palomar mountain sp.  it's a little bit of a drive up there but well worth it!  while your up there take a few mins and check out the observatory.

Cuyamaca and the surrounding county parks are great. The burnt trees look spooky-cool, and I love the contrast between the black and gray of the trees with the surrounding springtime green, the red earth, the blue sky....
they have deer and turkeys too. and streams for cooling off.

On a slight tangent, are there any hike-in (or bike-in) campgrounds around San Diego?

Cuyamaca is definitely my favorite. Penasquitos is a nice flat hike. Pick up Jerry Schad's "Afoot and Afield in San Diego County". Actually, if you can wait a month or two there is a new edition being released. Parts of Daley Ranch up in Escondido are cool. There are plenty of places around Japatul, like Horsethief Canyon. I just found a really nice meadow south of the 8 at the exit to Cuyamaca. That area is really only 30 miles from San Diego.
